Orcas – Year 6/Blwyddyn 6
Welcome to the Year 6 class page
YEAR 6 STAFF: Mrs Wisby & Mr McNaughton

Welcome back to the Summer term in Year 6. I hope you all had a lovely Easter break and that the pupils are raring to go. I can’t believe we are already in the final term in Year 6 – this year seems to have flown by! It’s an important term for our Y6 pupils as they prepare for the transition to secondary school. We also have our Y6 residential, Leavers’ Ceremony, Hendrefest, end of year assessments, and transition week at Olchfa, so we will be very busy over the coming weeks!
We have two topics planned for our final term in Year 6. When we return from our residential trip, we will be starting our first topic. We will be learning about the ‘Copperopolis’ and we will begin the term, as always, by spending some time discussing and planning our ideas together as a class.

In the 19th Century, 90% of the world’s copper was smelted in Swansea! We will be learning lots about copper and will be finding out why Swansea played such a significant part on the world stage in its development.
After May Half Term, we will be focusing on transition work. It is a very important term for the pupils as they prepare to move to secondary school. We will be working hard to prepare the pupils for a smooth transition, as well as allowing them chance to perform in the 2025 Y6 Leavers Concert. Pupils will also have the opportunity to engage in an enterprise project for this year’s ‘Hendrefest’. Pupils will be spending a week at Olchfa as part of the transition project work at the beginning of July. Details of this week will be sent out to you.

The Year 6 Home Learning menu will be accessible from Monday 28th April on our Google Classroom. All pupils are expected to hand in homework every fortnight – the due dates are stated clearly on the homework document. Normally, pupils can choose the order in which they complete the set tasks. This term we are asking for the 5-minute presentation and the research project to be completed in May. The transition homework booklets can then be completed in June, allowing pupils more time to complete the transition work over the course of the month. The pupils will be given these booklets at school.

Weekly spellings and tables tests will continue to take place this term every Thursday – word lists will be uploaded to the Google Classroom to allow the pupils to practise at home.
Please encourage your child to read as often and as widely as possible at home – this is really important and makes a significant impact on your child’s confidence with their learning in class. Pupils can take a book home from school or read a book of their own choice from home each week.
We will be regularly walking to Killay Library as a class this term. Pupils will be allowed to take out books of their own choice, but will be asked to leave these books in school as opportunities will be made for pupils to read for pleasure in class within our weekly timetable.
Our PE day is Thursday – please can pupils wear sports kit to school on this day (clothing that your child feels comfortable to exercise in).
I will keep you updated with any additional information that you may need, but if you have any questions, please come and speak to me directly. As always, key dates and important information will be sent to you directly on Weduc/via email. If you have not yet downloaded the school app, I would urge you to do so – it is a really quick and easy way for us to communicate with you.
Kindest regards,
Mrs Wisby
