Orcas – Year 6 / Blwyddyn 6
Welcome to the Year 6 Zone
YEAR 6 STAFF: Mr Davies, Mrs. Brisley, Mrs. Davies, Miss. Black

Welcome back to the Summer Term in Year 6. I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break and that the pupils are feeling refreshed and ready for the term ahead. It is hard to believe we have reached the final term already, the year has gone by so quickly!
This is a significant time for our Year 6 pupils as they begin preparing for their move to their respective comprehensive schools. We have a busy and exciting term planned, including the residential trip to Llain, Hendrefest, Leavers’ Ceremony in July, and a transition week at Olchfa.
We have two topics planned for the term. We will begin our first topic, exploring ‘Copperopolis’ from the first week back after Easter in into May/June. As always, we will start by working together as a class to share ideas, ask questions, and plan our learning journey.

Our Topic – Copperopolis and Moving On Up!
During the 19th century, Swansea became known as ‘Copperopolis’, with around 90% of the world’s copper being smelted here. This term, we will be exploring copper in depth and discovering why Swansea played such an important role on the global stage during this period.
Following the May half term, our focus will shift towards transition. This is a key time for pupils as they prepare for their move to secondary school. We will support them in developing confidence and independence, while also giving them opportunities to take part in the Year 6 Leavers’ Concert. Pupils will also be involved in our exciting enterprise project ‘Hendrefest’. In addition, they will spend a week at Olchfa at the beginning of July as part of their transition programme. Further details about this will be shared with you nearer the time.

Home Learning Menu – Summer Term
I am excited to share the Home Learning Menu with you this term. Pupils are expected to submit homework every fortnight, with clear deadlines provided. While pupils can usually choose the order in which they complete tasks, this term we are asking for the 5-minute presentation and research project to be completed during April / May / June. Transition homework booklets will then be completed in June, allowing pupils more time to focus on this important work. These booklets will be distributed in school.

First sharing date: Friday 1st May 2026. Then every two weeks until the end of term – Friday 15th May / / Friday 5th June / Friday 19th June / Friday 3rd July
This is a wonderful chance for pupils to celebrate their learning, build confidence in presenting, and enjoy seeing each other’s ideas.
Routines & Reminders
PE takes place every Tuesday. As part of our Health and Wellbeing provision, we will also make use of Coed Cadno to support outdoor learning and physical activity.
Spellings will be given out every Wednesday, with opportunities for pupils to practise in school and at home. I will update our Google classroom with these spellings weekly until June.
Please encourage your child to read often and explore different types of books at home. Regular reading can really boost their confidence and help them make progress in all areas of learning. Pupils can borrow a book from school each week or pick one from home. This term, we’re planning to continue regular trips to Killay Library so they can borrow even more books. This has been proven very popular with the pupils and it is a perfect opportunity to celebrate books and reading for pleasure.
I will continue to keep you updated with any important information, but if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to come and speak to me directly. Key dates and reminders will also be shared via Weduc and the calendar on the homepage of our website. If you haven’t already downloaded the school app, I would strongly encourage you to do so, as it is a quick and convenient way for us to communicate with you.
Kindest regards,
Mr. Davies
