Turtles – Year 2 & 3 / Blwyddyn 2 & 3
Croeso i Blwyddyn 2 / 3 – Turtles Miss Buffee
Summer Term 2026
Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely Easter break. I’m really looking forward to the new term and all the exciting learning we have planned.
Our class Teaching Assistant this year will be Mrs Lloyd Williams, and together we’re ready to support your children in every aspect of their learning and wellbeing.
Below are some of the things we will be looking at this half term.
We’re excited to start our new topic Food, Glorious Food, and the children have already helped shape our learning by sharing what they’d like to explore. Their ideas and questions have been displayed on our ‘Planning Together Tree’ in class. We are learning about food because it is a big part of our everyday lives and our Hendrefoilan community.

Here’s a little insight into what we’ll be covering this half term:
📖 Literacy:
We will be looking at lots of books linked to ‘Food, Glorious Food’ with a specific focus on the story of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ next half term, to inspire our reading, writing and discussions. We will be learning all about the features of Recount and Instruction texts and learning the story of ‘The Little Red Hen’ through Pie Corbett.
➕ Maths:
Our focus this term will be on Fractions, Time, Money, Shape, Data and Measures.
🗺️ Humanities:
This term, we will be exploring where our food comes from (Wales and the wider world), farming in Wales, how and why foods can only be grown/made in certain places due to climate and resources, how food travels and our impact on the environment from what we eat (local vs imported), food waste and sustainability.
🔬 Science:
In Science, we will be exploring why we need food for our physical and mental well being, food groups, plant growth and lifecycles.
🎨 Art:
Our Art will focus on the work of Arcimboldo, Cezanne and contemporary artists who use food as a platform for their art work.
We are really looking forward to an exciting term of discovery!
READING
Reading is such an important skill at this age, and we really appreciate your support at home.
Please continue to:
- Listen to your child read regularly, and read to them as often as you can – this helps build their love of stories, language and learning.
- Encourage your child to predict what might happen next in the story and summarise what they have read at the end of the session to check for understanding.
I will listen to the children read regularly in school and their reading books will be changed weekly.
Please return your child’s reading book and reading record every Wednesday, so that we can change the book and check progress. It will be sent home by Friday of that week at the latest. If you forget to send the book, just pop it in the next day. Thank you!
P.E.
P.E. will take place every Wednesday this half term and will focus on hockey and athletics activities in preparation for sports day.
Please send your child to school dressed in their P.E. kit.
To ensure your child is comfortable and prepared for all weather, please make sure they have:
- A jumper or zip-up jacket
- Jogging bottoms or leggings
- Trainers
All items should be clearly labelled with your child’s name. Thank you for your support!
OUTDOOR LEARNING
At Hendrefoilan, we are so lucky to have our wonderful forest area, Coed Cadno. We try and utilise the area as much as we possibly can.
Outdoor learning will be on a Monday. Please send your child into school dressed in appropriate clothing and ensure your child has a coat / waterproofs and wellies if necessary, for this day. Our cloakroom is limited on space, so I will not be keeping any outdoor learning clothes in school this year.
SNACKS / WATER BOTTLES
I believe it’s really important that children stay hydrated throughout the day. Please provide your child with a labelled water bottle which they can keep at the sink and use as needed.
Children may also bring a healthy snack in a small container to enjoy during morning break. Snacks will be kept in school bags, but please make sure any containers are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Thank you for helping us promote healthy habits!

Kind regards,
Miss Buffee and Mrs Lloyd Williams
