Sharks – Year 1 / Blwyddyn 1

Croeso i Ddosbarth Siarcod
Welcome to the Sharks Class
A very warm welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely summer break. I’m really looking forward to the new term, getting to know your children and the exciting learning we have planned.
Our class Teaching Assistant this year will be Miss Barsdell, and together we’re ready to support your children in every aspect of their learning and wellbeing.
Below are some of the things we will be looking at this half term.
We’re excited to start our new topic Who do you think you are? and the pupils have already helped shape our learning by sharing what they’d like to explore. Their ideas and questions have been displayed on our ‘Planning Together Tree’ in class. We are learning about family because it is a huge part of our everyday lives and our Hendrefoilan community.

Here’s a little insight into what we’ll be covering this half term:
📖 Literacy:
We will be looking at a variety of books linked to Growth Mindset and Family, and basing our literacy tasks on these.
➕ Maths:
Our focus this half-term will be on place value, addition and subtraction. We will explore maths in a cross curricular way and develop our problem solving and reasoning skills.
🎨 Expressive Arts
We will focus on exploring different techniques to paint, colour, draw and create, as well as experimenting with different materials.
Humanities:
Humanities will link directly to our topic Who do you think you are?
We are really looking forward to an exciting term of discovery!
READING
Reading is such an important skill at this age, and we really appreciate your support at home.
Please continue to:

- Listen to your child read regularly, and read to them as often as you can. This helps build their love of stories, language and learning.
- Encourage your child to predict what might happen next in the story and summarise what they have read at the end of the session to check for understanding.
We will listen to the children read regularly in school and their reading books will be changed weekly.
Please return your child’s reading book and reading record every Wednesday, so that we can change the book and check progress. It will be sent home by Friday of that week at the latest. If you forget to send the book, just pop it in the next day. Thank you!
P.E. & Outdoor Learning (Coed Cadno)
P.E. and Outdoor Learning will both take place every Friday. Please send your child to school dressed in suitable clothing for easy movement for P.E. and ensure your child has a coat/waterproofs and wellies if necessary, for this day. Our cloakroom is limited on space, so I will not be keeping any outdoor learning clothes in school this year.

To ensure your child is comfortable and prepared for all weather, please make sure they have:
- A jumper or zip-up jacket
- Jogging bottoms or leggings
- Trainers
- A coat
All items should be clearly labelled with your child’s name. Thank you for your support!
SNACKS / WATER BOTTLES

I believe it’s really important that children stay hydrated throughout the day. Please provide your child with a labelled water bottle which they can keep at the sink and use as needed.
Children may also bring a healthy snack in a small container to enjoy during morning break. Please make sure any containers are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Thank you for helping us promote healthy habits!
