Sharks – Year 1/Blwyddyn 1

Croeso i Dosbarth
Welcome to the Sharks Class
This term in Year 1, we’re diving into an exciting new topic Villan or Hero? This is all about Superheroes, Killay and Forces. The children will be exploring the real “superpowers” we all have, learning about the heroes in our community, and discovering what makes our local area of Killay such a special place to live and learn.

In Science, we’ll become investigators as we explore forces and friction — testing how different surfaces help objects slide, roll or stop, and finding out how pushes and pulls can change the way things move. Out and about in Killay, we’ll become street detectives, spotting natural and man‑made features and mapping our journeys around the local area.
It’s a hands‑on, curiosity‑filled term where children will think, explore, create and discover — all while developing confidence, independence and a sense of pride in their community.

Reading
Reading is such an important skill, the earlier the begin to read the better. Please help us by:
- Listening to your child read regularly, and
- Read to them as often as you can – this helps build their love of stories, language, and learning.
Please return your child’s reading book and reading record every Tuesday, so that we can change the book and check progress. It will be sent home by Friday of that week at the latest. If you forget to send the book, just pop it in the next day. Thank you!
| Outdoor learning Outdoor learning will be on a Monday . Please send your child into school dressed in appropriate clothing and ensure your child has a coat, for this day. Our cloakroom is limited on space, so I will not be keeping any outdoor learning clothes in school this year. At Hendrefoilan, we are so lucky to have our wonderful forest area- Coed Cadno. We try and utilise the area as much as we possibly can. | PE Our PE lessons will also take place on a Monday. Please ensure your child is comfortable and prepared for all weather, please make sure they have: A jumper or zip-up jacket Jogging bottoms or leggings Trainers All items should be clearly labelled with your child’s name. Thank you for your support! |
Snacks and Water Bottles
Please send your child into school with a water bottle labelled with their name. They will be able to access it when needed in class.
Children may also bring a healthy snack in a small container to enjoy during morning break. Please make sure any containers are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

If you have any queries or questions as the term goes by, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Many Thanks,
Mrs. Davies
